print page

As part of the Austrian “CDM in Africa” Initiative, the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management with support from Kommunalkredit Public Consulting organized capacity building workshops in three African countries on the CDM in the Energy Sector. The three- to five-day workshops were carried out by the Austrian consulting firm Energy Changes in Ethiopia, Ghana and Uganda in May and June, 2008. A similar workshop will be held in Tanzania.

The main aims were:

• to calculate of the national grid emission factor according to the UNFCCC tool,
• to transfer theoretical and practical knowledge on the application of this tool,
• to identify existing data gaps and to find solutions on how to overcome these gaps, and
• to assess the potential of off-grid energy production for the CDM.

The events were attended by officials from the respective Designated National Authorities as well as by local stakeholders including Environmental Protection Agencies, Energy Regulators, NGOs and private companies.
